It has been our experience that Mimulus × hybridus 'Maximus Mix' performs well in our area in cool season plantings. We have found its flowers to be attractive and plentiful, starting at the beginning of spring. During the winter months, the foliage is present, but is not particularly ornamental. It appears to do well in part shade and benefits from having some protection above it, such as a tree limb or overhang. It is also a good addition as a "spiller" in containers.
